The 3 Gold Piece was authorized by Congress in 1853 and first struck in 1854. The first and only coin of this odd denomination was designed by Chief Mint Engraver John B. Longacre, best known for designing America's beloved Indian Head Cent. The obverse of the 3 Gold Piece represents an Indian princess with hair tightly curling over the neck, head crowned with a circle of feathers. The band is inscribed LIBERTY. A wreath of tobacco, corn, and cotton fills the field of the reverse, with the denomination and date within it. The mint mark is below the wreath. The coin was minted in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Dahlonega, Georgia. The odd denomination was never popular and saw very little circulation. This replica coin is minted of brass then layered with pure 24k gold.
